A JOURNEY TROUGH GRIEF
The year 2016 will forever be etched in my memory as one of the most challenging and heartbreaking periods of my life. It was the year when I lost my father, a dedicated truck driver who always worked tirelessly to provide for us. The journey through his loss was a harrowing experience filled with pain, sorrow, and struggles.
The news of my father's passing came as a shock. One evening, he left home for his usual drive, promising to be back soon. The following day, instead of his cheerful call to check on us, we received devastating news that he had been involved in a fatal accident, of which he wasn't able to survive any more.
The sadness of his death made it even more difficult to comprehend and accept. It felt as if the ground had been pulled away, leaving us in a state of disbelief. In the immediate aftermath of my father's passing, our home was full of emotions, confusion, and a profound sense of loss all mingled together, creating an emotion storm that was so hard to navigate.
That day we were supposed to be at school as usual, but our routine was shattered, and the simplest act of daily life felt incredibly difficult. The sorrow was constantly present, overshadowing everything else. Travelling to the location where my father's accident had occurred was a tough journey. Every mile brought a deeper sense of sorrow. The memories of him, which were usually a source of comfort, now felt like a painful reminder of what had happened.
The funeral was such comforting to see friends and his driver colleagues come together to honor my father's memory, sharing stories and the good times they had with him. Yet it was also a stark reminder that he was no more. The finality of his burial brought unbearable pain and the realization that we would never again hear nor seek his advice anymore. It felt like a wound that has never dried was opened up.
In the weeks and months that followed, we struggled to move on and find a new normal. Most of my dad's family didn't even bother about what we were going through; they all went on with their daily lives. The main source of support and hope came from the immediate family with whom we lived not far away from each other, offering a space where we could express our emotions freely and connect with others who also had the same loss.
As the time went by, we began to find comfort in our memories by revisiting the old photographs, listening to his favorite music, and reflecting on the lessons he had taught us, reminding us of his presence in our lives. Adjusting to life without him was an ongoing process. We found some more ways to honor his memory while adjusting to the new life. The journey was really tough by imagining a word without him.
Yet through the darkness, we found moments of light through the acceptance of the new reality.
